MILANO and BASEL
November 2004

Six o'clock in the morning at Prestwick, and the Scotland contingent of Lombardia Hearts are waiting for their plane to Bergamo, with a few light refreshments to hand and (out of picture) a large number of Celtic supporters taking the most complicated route to Barcelona they could find...

L to R: Chris, Rab, Roger, Keith, Alan, and Kenny.

A brief stop at Melzo to meet President Andy and get some scran, and then on the train at Gorgonzola to head for the centre of Milano and the AC Milan v Shakhtar Donetsk champion's league match. We were supporting Donetsk, of course. Honestly, Andy.

The only picture Andy has permitted us to show of Milan v Donetsk.

It's just before the kick-off, and everyone finds the suggestion that Milan will win 4-0 very amusing.

Early next morning, and we're off to Basel. Keith and Alan forgot to set their clocks to continental time, and almost missed the train as a result. On the train we were joined by Ian and Lee, and converted Heather (from San Diego, at the bottom of the pic) to the ways of the Hearts. We left her at Zurich with a Hearts scarf, and a broad and deep knowledge of the merits of Scottish football.

[Less than two weeks later, Heather and some of her pals met up with the rest of us in the Diggers, and saw the Jambos beat the Pars 3-0. Having previously seen Roma play, she decided Hearts were the more skilful team. We couldn't possibly disagree...]

Ed eccoci allo stadio St. Jakob. C'MON THE HEARTS !

And so to the St Jakob Stadion in Basel. C'mon the Hearts! Our digital technology didn't capture the match too well,
but if you need to be told the score... WE WON 1-2 !!!

Below, right : Is it Lardo, or Blofeld from James Bond, with Miss Kitty in hand?

Fraser e Stuart felici al fischio finale

Fraser and Stuart wearing post-match grins as big as the Matterhorn. Probably.

A bit out of order, so to speak : banner waving during the refuelling
session before we set off for the game.

It will come as absolutely no surprise that we returned to the Bar Stockli and had a few wee drinks after the game too. This delightful lady, who wasn't called Patrick, served us with beer into the early hours.

Celebrations went on into the night (above).

Fraser (alone, right) enjoys a power nap between ..well, drinking and sleeping...  Not sure what the guys in the background are getting so animated about.

A much quieter train back to Milano the day after the win.

Roger fails miserably in his attempts to take candid photos of the rest of the group.

Lombardia Hearts dinner at Andrea Martinelli's restaurant in Cassano D'Adda. The Scottish travelling support were joined by local members Big Rab Testa, Paolo (Pimpi), Gino, Elvio (Elvis), Maurizio (Mo) Luciano (Lou) and Bonura (Tam). Plus President Andy and Signor Martinelli, of course. Johnny Mackay and wife Debbie also joined us having flown in from Scotland.

Sunday. Much of the Scottish based group had headed home on the Saturday. But for Lardo and Chris, Andy and Big Rab, there were two games to take in today...

Firstly, a trip to the Stadio Giovanni Mari to see serie C2 side AC Legnano take on Pizzighettone in an important clash. Lilla won it 1-0, and went top of the league.

We stood in the curva (entrance was free for this big match!) and joined in the singing, chanting and clapping. Arms and hands were sore for days afterwards...

More pictures from this match are on the Legnano Ultras website:

Ever wondered what happens when you play for Rangers and concede an early penalty against Hearts in a Cup Final that the Jambos go on to win?

Well, if your name is Sergio Porrini, you end up playing for Pizzighettone (arrowed)...

But the real reason for going to this match was to meet a cup WINNER. For Legnano are coached by our very own Italian midfield maestro, Stefano Salvatori! Andy Teruzzi used all his influence to contact the great man, who seemed very pleased to see us (not sure what he made of the impromptu rendition of the Hearts song in the car park after the game, though).

Just time to take a few photos with the banner, and then jump in the car and head off to the San Siro for the second game of the day :
Inter v Juventus.

Andy has let us display a lot more photos of this one.

Johnny and Debbie (above) looking cheerful before the game kicks off.
Our expressions were a little different when Inter were 0-2 down,
but Vieri and Adriano saw them to a worthy draw in the end,
and the smiles returned...
Fireworks accompany the arrival of the teams.

The celebrations following Adriano's equaliser were pretty spectacular too!

And so back to Andrea's restaurant for our last Pizzas of the trip. A frutti di mare and a beer around midnight just can't be beaten.

Tired but happy, we made our way back to Prestwick, then Edinburgh, the next day.

Four games in six days : Football Heaven!
